The Eagles have finally addressed their need for a bell-cow Running Back with the signing of LeGarrette Blount to a 1 year deal worth up to $2.8 million.
Blount adds immense power and physicality to a relatively small and fragile Running Backs room. Blount had by far the best season of his career with the Patriots last year with 18 touchdowns(!!!!!) and 1,161 yards.
Blount will presumably be the 1st and 2nd down back for the most part giving way to Sproles, Smallwood or Pumphrey on 3rd downs, whilst also provides the goal-line back the Eagles sorely needed last year.
This signing makes Ryan Mathews getting cut even more inevitable once he gets healthy and makes the recent UDFA signing of Corey Clement more likely playing for a spot on the practice squad rather than for that 4th Running Back spot, and if Clement does make the practice squad and isn’t picked up by another team, Blount could be a nice teacher throughout the season as they have similar power running styles.
He’s a tough, hard runner that can only help alleviate the pressure off of Wentz with his running and his blocking. Overall a nice one-year stop gap until the loaded Running Back draft class of 2018.
Welcome to Philly, LeGarrette.
